Yesterday the 19th of November 2022, a school bus crashed in Taita Taveta County leading to the killing of several people on board.
The accident occurred between Wundayi and Mwatate near a common blackspot at Josa.
It has been revealed that the bus was transporting teachers from Memon Academy who were on their way back after attending a funeral in Kidaya.
“There is a bad crash at Taita on Josa black spot involving a Memon school bus, people have lost their lives (bodies lying on the ground), rescue ongoing,” revealed Sikika Road Safety.
By 9 pm, three people had been confirmed dead.
However, the exact number of people who have died as a result of the accident is yet to be determined and was expected to rise.
Rescue operations are ongoing with area residents and first respondents assisted in rescuing, surviving and removing bodies from the accident area.
Survivors were taken to the local county hospital for prompt treatment and admission.
Images leaked online, the school bus appeared to have repeatedly rolled into a ditch.
The accident occurred in the late afternoon inflicting significant damage to the roof of the vehicle.
Suleiman Shahbal, a Mombasa businessman and the newly-elected EALA representative was among the first politicians to offer their condolences to relatives of the deceased and wished the best for the survivors.
“I am saddened by the reports of an accident involving the Memon Academy bus carrying teachers travelling to attend a funeral. The accident in Taita Taveta County is reported to have led to the loss of some of the teachers on the bus.
“My prayers and that of my wife Rahma go out to the family of the deceased, the injured, and the school management. May Allah rest the departed souls in eternal peace,” said Shahbal.
At the time of writing, the cause of the accident had not yet been identified.
