School Headteachers Surprisingly Apply For JSS Deployment

According to reports, some headteachers applied for positions in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) when the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) recently advertised vacancies in the past month.

In a circular dated the 17th of February 2023, TSC advertised the availability of 10,833 requests for the deployment of qualified primary school teachers to junior secondary schools.

The process is set to begin this coming week in several sub-counties across the country and TSC Sub-County Directors have already invited shortlisted P1 teachers for verification of documents.

However, some primary school administrators have plans to move on to junior secondary schools.

This is because deployed teachers are set to start in job group C2. However, with some headteachers in job group C3, they are set for quite a shift on their paycheck.

One of the primary school headteachers told Teacher.co.ke that he preferred to join JSS so that he could become a JSS administrator.

According to the Career Progression guidelines (CPG) for teachers, deployed teachers will start from job grade C2 and then advance automatically to job grade C3 after completing three years.

It has also been reported that some school administrators could be transferred but their pay will not be reduced and they will also not be in charge of the new schools.

Several sub-counties are still doing the verification process.

According to the teachers’ employer, the teachers will be stationed close to the current location.

The TSC CEO Dr Nancy Macharia revealed that the teachers should be assigned to their existing stations or the ones that are close to them as much as possible.

Macharia also advised that in case a school requires more than one teacher with the same subject combination, Sub-County Directors should not employ instructors with comparable subject combinations with those who are already posted to the JSS.

The TSC CEO suggested that SNE-qualified teachers be sent to special JSSs.

Each teacher must have two letters of deployment signed by the Sub-County Director.

One of the letters will be given to the teacher and the second original letter will be sent along with other deployment paperwork to the headquarters.
