PS Jwan Calls for Quick Probe into Kisumu Boys Fire Incident

The Ministry of Education has cleared the path for investigations to begin to find out what caused a fire that burnt down three dormitories and four classrooms at Kisumu Boys High school.

The fire incident occurred on the morning of Saturday 20th August.

Property worth millions was consumed by the fire which displaced 250 students.

The fire broke out in one of the dormitories while the learners were in class and spread quickly to the neighbouring classrooms and adjacent dormitories.

According to the Principal Secretary (PS) Julius Jwan state agencies have already been deployed to establish what caused the fire.

The PS said that teams will come up with a detailed report on the extent of damage with various stakeholders moving to partner with the school to restore normal conditions.

Speaking at the school this Saturday, Ps Jwan said that the report from the probe will help the ministry to find a way forward on fixing the destroying infrastructure.

“The Ministry will only come in after we have established the cause of the fire. The Kenya Power and Ministry of Housing teams have asked for time to conclude the investigations.

“I have said this before that the government shall not allocate funds to rebuild the burnt infrastructure if it is found that the fire was started by students,” said PS Jwan.

All 1,652 out of 2,300 students reported back to the school on Friday following the half-term break.

Kisumu Boys management decided not to send the students back home with the Kenya Red Cross offering to deliver twenty tents to be used as accommodation by affected learners.

Ten of the tents he said will be used as classrooms while others will be converted into temporary dormitories.

“The school has liaised with their contractors and suppliers who have promised to donate mattresses and beddings for the affected students,” he said.

He called on parents to be calm and added that the school will issue a communication to them on the way forward.
