The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chief Executive Nancy Macharia has revealed a new policy that shall govern the recruitment of school heads.
Dr. Nancy Macharia said in a statement that TSC had a policy that would ensure principals and their deputies in mixed schools are not of the same gender.
The Commission’s CEO further explained that the institution arrived at the decision so as to boost inclusivity in the teaching profession.
This comes amid claims of gender disparity in the management of public schools in the country.
Not a long time ago, there were reports doing rounds on the internet that the Ministry of Education was planning to remove school heads from the supervisory title.
The reports indicated that the Ministry of Education was planning to change the Basic Education Act to redefine the definition of the word ‘manager’.
If the changes go through, this would have meant that the Ministry of Education would have to recruit new school managers who would take over the responsibilities of managing schools.
It has been rumored that TSC wants to take over the management of the finances of schools where hefty budgets are disbursed to more than 30,000 heads of schools that turn out into millions of shillings.
TSC is also seeking to take charge of teachers who manage infrastructure and also the safety of children in schools.
School headteachers had announced on March 15 that there would be early closure of schools due to the lack of funds.
School administrators complained about the purchase of examination materials facing challenges as the government has not disbursed the expected Ksh. 15 million funds for basic education.
