With Utamaduni Day falling on Sunday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has declared Monday the 10th of October, 2021.
“In line with the provisions of Section 2 and 4 of the Public Holidays Act (Cap 110), it is hereby confirmed that 11th October 2021 will be a public holiday,” announced CS Matiang’i.
As stipulated in the Public Holidays Act of 1984, when a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the “succeeding day not being a public holiday, shall be a public holiday and the first-mentioned day shall cease to be a public holiday”.
Moi Day was renamed Utamaduni in 2019 to celebrate the rich cultural diversity in Kenya. Utmadauni Day is celebrated on October 10 every year. Moi Day used to be marked on the same date since 1988 when the late former President of the Republic of Kenya marked ten years in power but the celebration was halted in 2019 and replaced with the new Utamaduni Day.
However, the High Court reinstated the day citing infringement of the Public Holidays Act in the removal of the commemoration of Moi Day. The renaming then paved the way for Utamaduni Day to be celebrated every year on October 10.
