The Ministry of Education has released guidelines for the implementation of the Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) Curriculum.
The released guidelines will enable current primary school administrators to implement the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
The guidelines will address many issues including financial management and government allocation of finances, the structure of leadership in JSS, Infrastructure management and shared use, Basic Education Act, areas of learning in the JSS, learners’ welfare in JSS i.e. new distinct uniform and staffing in JSS and Teaching load.
According to the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, Grade 7 learners will attend 45 sessions per week with every lesson having a duration of 40 minutes.
Junior Secondary School comprises Grades 7, 8, and 9.
The following are the compulsory and optional subjects offered in junior secondary school.
COMPULSORY SUBJECTS
- English
- Kiswahili or Kenyan Sign Language for learners who are deaf
- Integrated science
- Mathematics
- Pre-Technical and Pre-Career Education
- Religious education – learners choose one of CRE, IRE, and HRE
- Social studies
- Business Studies
- Agriculture
- Life Skills Education; and
- Sports and Physical Education
OPTIONAL SUBJECTS (Minimum 1, Minimum 2)

- Home Science
- Computer Science
- Foreign Languages
- German
- French
- Mandarin
- Arabic
