Ministry of Education Announces Standardized Uniforms and Reclassifies Intern Teachers

The Kenyan Ministry of Education has introduced a series of policy changes following the National Education Conference held at the Lake Naivasha Resort. Key decisions include the implementation of standardized school uniforms nationwide and the reclassification of teacher interns as teachers on contract.

Standardized Uniforms and Cost Controls

The three-day conference, opened by President William Ruto, included stakeholders such as the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), lawmakers, and teachers’ unions. Participants resolved that comprehensive and senior schools will adopt standardized uniforms. Individual schools will retain their distinct identities by using specific badges. Additionally, delegates proposed implementing a cap on the cost of uniforms to help manage educational expenses for parents.

Changes to Teacher Employment Terms

During the forum, the decision was made to replace the title of teacher intern with teacher on contract. Stakeholders also recommended that these contract teachers be automatically transitioned into permanent and pensionable roles upon the completion of their two-year contracts. Transition to Comprehensive Schools

The conference also reaffirmed the national transition toward the Comprehensive Schools model. This approach is designed to streamline the educational structure by integrating primary education within the broader school framework, ensuring a more cohesive educational progression.
