Minet Reveals Number of Teachers Who Die Annually

According to data revealed by Minet Kenya, three teachers die every day leading to a total of 1095 deaths per year.

For the last half-decade, the year 2020/2021 had the highest number of teachers dying (1430) teachers dying while the year 2015/16 had the fewest with a total of 880 deaths among teachers.

Going by Counties, Kakamega County had the highest number of deaths (16,290). Kitui County was second with a total of 14,518 deaths, Nakuru had 13998 while Meru had 13,998.

Among the counties that had the fewest are Garissa with 1,338, Lamu 1,372, Isiolo 1,415, Mandera (1,504) and Wajir with 1,504.

In terms of visiting hospitals, teachers in Nairobi have made the highest number of visits to hospitals than their colleagues in any other county in the country. Nairobi County teachers as well as their spouses went to the hospital 911,651 times with 36,630 inpatient visits recorded out of the total hospital visits.

The number of outpatients recorded was 799,298.

The figures recorded in Nairobi are encouraging in terms of teachers and their dependents trusting hospitals for medical attention. The number was also that high considering that there are still counties that have more teachers registered with AON Minet than those in Nairobi.

In Nairobi County, there are 6,818 resident teachers with 3,925 confirmed marriages and 9,087 children.

Uasin Gishu County comes second with 568,194 hospital visits with Bungoma, Nakuru and Mer County recording 496,899, 476,052 and 438,428 respectively.

The lowest figures for hospital visits were still recorded by Wajir County with 11,637 with 1,455 of these resulting in admissions. Turkana County had 15259 visits with only one hospital admission, Isiolo had 23,053, Tana River 23,299 and Mandera County had 26,115.

Uasin Gishu County recorded the highest number of maternity visits (17,528) followed by Nakuru County (10,002) while Nairobi County, in third, recorded 9,151.

However, the number of babies given birth to is not indicated in the Minet data.

The 2,689 teachers in Turkana did not make any maternity visits while West Pokot had 7, Elgeyo-Marakwet had 10 with Nyandarua recording only 11 maternity visits. These Counties were among the lowest recorded.

Under the AON Minet medical insurance scheme, Teachers are entitled to maternity benefits that range between Sh. 100,000 to Sh. 200,000.

For outpatient coverage, the entitled amount for teachers is between Sh. 100,000 to Sh. 375,000 depending on the job group. For inpatient, this figure ranges between Sh. 750,000 to Sh. 2.5 Million depending on the job group.

The TSC-funded Scheme has existed for six years and is the largest of its kind in the country.

As of July 2021, AON Minet Minet covers around 334,531 teachers and their 734,372 dependents.

The medical scheme has been in the limelight in the past following complaints by teachers over frustrations encountered with the scheme.
