Magoha Pushes Reopening of Schools Further to Thursday, 18th of August 2022

The Ministry of Education has again announced new dates for reopening owing to the tallying of votes going at Bomas of Kenya Centre.

Earlier, the Cabinet Secretary announced the closure of schools on the 2nd of August 2022 and set the opening dates on the 10th of August 2022.

“As you are aware, Kenya is scheduled to conduct its national elections on Tuesday 9 August 2022. Therefore, following consultation, I hereby convey the Government’s decision on the immediate closure of all basic education institutions from Tuesday 2 until Wednesday 10 August to ensure that preparations for the conduct of upcoming elections are carried out seamlessly,” said Prof Magoha last week.

However, following revelations that results will not be announced at least after a few days following the general elections the government pushed the reopening of schools until today the 15th of August 2022.

“Following further consultations, I hereby convey the Government’s decision that Basic Education Institutions will reopen from Monday,” said CS Magoha.

“I ordered the early closure of all Basic Education Institutions to allow for adequate preparation and conduct of the General Elections. We indicated that reopening would be on the 11th of August 2022. However, the Ministry has been informed that the process of tallying ballots may still be ongoing on the aforementioned date,” added Magoha.

However, with the announcing of the Presidential Elections still yet to be done, the government has again announced the reopening dates on Thursday 18th of August 2022 due to the delay in the votes tallying process.

“Following the conduct of our National Elections on Tuesday 9th August 2022 the process of tallying of ballots is still ongoing. Therefore, following further consultations, I hereby convey the Government’s decision on the suspension of the reopening of ALL Basic Education institutions with effect from Monday, 15th August 2022 until Thursday 18th August 2022,” said CS Magoha.

Magoha also said that the latest communication issued supersedes any earlier communication from the Ministry of Education over the reopening of institutions of basic education.
