The Government through the Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu has abolished morning and evening preps for learners in a move set to give them enough rest.
CS Machogu said that learners should not be asked to report to class before the break of dawn and end school activities before dusk. He added saying that the stipulated time is enough to cover the syllabus without straining learners.
“As we resume our normal education calendar, it is clearly stipulated in the curriculum that learning begins at 8:00 am and ends at 3:45 pm. we are subjecting learners to unnecessary struggles by waking them at 4:00 am and attending lessons in schools by 6:00 am,” said CS Machogu.
The CS warned schools against the issue saying that it causes mental torture and that the school environment should not be like a prison.
Sossion: CBC is inferior to 8-4-4
Former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary-General Wilson Sossion has claimed that the 8-4-4 system of education was far superior as compared to the Competency-Based Curriculum.
The CBC Is gradually phasing the 8-4-4 system out.
“CBC design as it is currently is for more inferior to the 8-4-4 system. It is not going to help this country, it is not going to help stem education,” said Sossion.
However, Sossion remarked that he was hopeful that the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms will make modifications so that it fits the needs of learners.
“I want to believe that the Presidential Working Party in its second, third, and final report will provide a lasting solution that will see us design a curriculum that is ideal for this country, but not as a pressed curriculum that was picked elsewhere,” added Sossion.
