Lecturers’ Strike Stops Learning at the Kenya Institute of Management

The Kenya Institute of Management (KIM) is a well-known institute in the country with a great reputation owing to notable ventures into entrepreneurship that students coming out of the institute have been known for.

KIM has been in existence for more than sixty years and has grown in both repute and trust to the extent that learners coming from Kenya and the larger East African region have elected to join the institution.

The institute has been training individuals by offering training for certificates, diplomas and other KASNEB courses. Graduates from KIM have joined the corporate sector while others have done well in business ventures.

KIM’s Financial Problems

It has been revealed that the institution is now gradually falling backwards from where it once was, leading many students at the institution to wonder what is coming next.

It has been alleged that many lecturers working at the institution have not been paid for many months and this has affected their morale as well as their families. Many of them have had a challenge providing for their families and other financial obligations they might have been having.

Fee Increase with No Visible Changes in Services

It has been revealed that the college increased fees in the month of October from Kshs. 35,000 to Kshs 45,000 yet basic items like toilet paper for students have been hard to come by. The tradition of providing toilet papers had been there hence the frustrations among students.

“For us students, if we do not attend 80% of our classes we cannot sit for the final examinations…but what about lectures who have attended just a lowly 1% of their classes?” wondered one of KIM’s students.

Students have also revealed that there are scheduled examinations in March this year yet they have not covered much content in some units.

Besides not being taught, learners who did their examinations in 2021 have not received their results.

Lecturers’ declaration

Most lecturers, while speaking to the media have given an indication that they will not be returning to class until they get paid what they are owed.

The management on the other hand did not show any willingness to comment when contacted by Teacher.co.ke.
