The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has accused the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) of planning to frustrate teachers’ demands for new salaries and allowances.
The teachers’ union’s officials led by their Secretary-General Akello Misori were responding to a story in a local daily newspaper that had reported that the SRC had increased house allowances for civil servants.
The article stated that civil servants in Nairobi and in Job Group A will get Kshs. 3,750, up from the previous Kshs. 3,000.
Akello Misori spoke during a press conference on Wednesday where he said that the ‘new’ allowances were not really ‘new’ and said that the SRC had published an outdated circular which was a mischievous scheme to frustrate teachers’ demands.
“Since 2019 when we presented our final memorandum of demands to the TSC for the 2021-2025 CBA cycle, the SRC has employed numerous tactics to defeat the union’s course,” said Akello Misori.
Besides, he added that the union had recommended harmonization of house allowances across all job groups to the rates currently paid to teachers working in Nairobi.
Therefore, he renewed his call for the same to be done across the country.
However, the SRC, when questioned over the same refuted claims of them having issued the circular.
“Please note that the story is incorrect and untrue. We have not issued any circular as purported by the local daily,” said Anthony Mwangi, the SRC head of corporate communications.
