Around 2500 needy students from Kajiado East Constituency have been awarded Kshs. 25 Million bursary funds from the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF).
Kajiado East Member of Parliament Peris Tobiko, while handing over the cheques to beneficiaries at the NGCDF officers Kitengela town, she said that the funds will benefit 197 university students and an additional 148 college students.
According to the MP, 1927 secondary school students will receive bursaries while an additional 66 will receive full scholarships. She also revealed that the bursary only targets students from low-income families and that a committee chooses the beneficiaries from each of the 20 locations.
“This criterion ensures that the targeted groups are genuine and that there is no bias in allocation. The ones who have benefitted are the ones who are in dire need and whose education may be cut short if they do not receive the bursary to pay their fees,” said Tobiko.
Besides, she also said that in addition to bursaries, she had also funded the construction of classrooms, libraries, toilets, and dormitories.
She urged principals not to misappropriate funds and urged them to practice transparency in order to improve school infrastructure.
“NG-CDF has been and will continue to play a vital role in uplifting educational standards in Kajiado East through the construction of new classrooms and repairing damaged ones, constructing staffrooms, teachers’ quarters, and building dormitories,” said MP.
Tobiko lauded the residents of Kajiado East for electing her to two terms in parliament and urged her successor to follow her example and ensure that the NG-CDF benefit all residents, regardless of their tribe.
