KICD Releases Junior Secondary School Syllabus

The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has released the consumer rights syllabus for 2023 Grade Seven learners.

This was revealed through a joint statement with the Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK), KICD revealed that the syllabus was important due to the emerging trends on consumer rights in light of digital financial services.

The syllabus is set to take effect as of January 23, 2023, when schools shall reopen for the first term of 2023.

 More than 1.2 Million Learners transitioning to junior secondary schools in January are set to benefit from concepts taught in subjects like Home Science and Business Studies.

In 2024 and 205 the same concepts will be taught around 24 subjects in Grades 8 and 9 respectively. After this the concepts shall be taught in more than 30 subjects in Junior Secondary School grades 10, 11 and 12.

“The objective of this partnership with the KICD is to prepare and impart young citizens with the capacity to make informed consumer choices in adulthood, especially when faced with different products and services due to increased competition and market complexities.The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has released the consumer rights syllabus for 2023 Grade Seven learners.

“This is informed by merging realities, especially in digital financial services,” revealed the CAK director general Wang’ombe Kariuki.

On his part, KICD Directors Charles Ong’ondo said that the course will also be taught practically using drama, song and dance to better make the classes impactful.

“Consumer-related issues affect all of us irrespective of age. By mainstreaming them in the curriculum, we shall equip our young citizens with the requisite knowledge, skills and values to safeguard them from exploitation by unscrupulous business persons and organizations,” said Ongo’ondo.
