Kakamega County Releases Kshs. 120 Million Bursary Funds for Needy Students

Kakamega County Government has released funds for bursaries meant for bright but needy students who were out of school.

The bursary funds were worth Kshs. 120 Million.

Deputy Governor (DG) Ayub Savula while attending a meeting with a group of professionals from Shinyalu Constituency, he said that each of the sixty wards in the county had received Kshs. 2 Million.

According to Savula, the cash had been secured from the county coffers of a supplementary budget and the funds would be disbursed by bursary committees.

He revealed that the bursary committees would be chaired by the Ward Administrators under supervision from their respective Members of County Assemblies.

“This amount is meant to cushion the dire situation and aid the children to at least go back to class.

“This does not give an opportunity to the MCAs and county staff to reward their cronies while overlooking the deserving cases. We have put measures in place to make sure there is no nepotism, favouritism or pilferage,” said Savula.

Savula called on those concerned to ensure that the funds are utilized prudently to ensure bright but needy and therefore deserving students get their bursaries.

Savula also revealed that the county will fully implement a scheme of service for Early Childhood Development Education teachers.

He said that the scheme of service would improve the pay and welfare of the ECDE teachers with the lowest earner being paid Kshs. 28,000 per month.

“We shall hire teachers aged 45 and below on permanent and pensionable terms while those aged over 45 years will be hired on renewable contracts,” added Savula.
