Teachers across the country received an early New Year’s gift after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) issued an announcement concerning 13,000 promotion vacancies for the 14,742 teachers who have been stuck in the same job grade for a long time.
Teachers’ unions and education stakeholders complained to TSC over the previous advertisement for promotions claiming that it was biased and had not considered teachers who had been stuck in the same job group for a long time.
13,717 vacancies have been announced with 3,210 being allocated to secondary schools and 10,507 being allocated to primary schools. Besides, 1,330 teachers are also set to be promoted.
According to the Commission’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Nancy Macharia, the promotions will be based on Career Progression Guidelines (CPG).
According to Dr. Macharia, 1,021 teachers will be placed in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) Counties while the other counties that are not in ASAL areas will share the remaining promotion vacancies which comprise Principals, Deputy Principals, Senior Masters, and Headquarters in primary and secondary schools.
Teachers’ Training Colleges were also not left out (TTCs) are they are also set to get new Chief Principals under Job Group 5. 73 teachers are also set to be promoted to the position of chief principal status in both regular schools and in Special Needs Education (SNEs) with a further 603 allocated for principals in regular schools. Eight slots were also assigned for SNEs while 17 deputy principals I are also going to be promoted.
Those in Job Group D2 in Deputy Principals II are allocated 725 slots while deputies in cluster III for regular schools have 224 slots. SNE will get 15 slots and 208 senior teachers in cluster II placed in the same group D1. Senior teachers 1 in C3 got the highest number with 1,400 teachers being promoted.
2,733 primary school teachers will be moved to regular schools and promoted to Job Group C5. 32 teachers in SNE will be placed for promotion with 7,720 Deputies in regular schools in C4 and 22 from the SNE replacing them.
“Teachers seeking promotion to the rank of Chief Principal in TTCs must have served as Senior Principal at T-Scake 14,” said Dr. Nancy Macharia.
The TSC CEO said secondary school teachers who have served as Senior Principals but their Principals counterparts will have to provide proof of serving as Deputy Principal II or Senior Master I.
For Deputy Principals, they will have to have served as Deputy Principal II or Senior Masters I T-Scale 12 while Deputy Principal II must have served as Deputy Principal III or Senior Master II.
Those in Deputy Principal II are required to have served as Senior Masters III are required to have served as Senior Master III while those in Special Schools are supposed to have at least a Diploma in SNE.
