Increased Insecurity at Kisii University Worries Parents and Students

Increased insecurity at Kisii University has worried students of Kisii University as well as their parents.

The parents and students have implored the institution’s administration to intervene and address the problem.

While speaking to the media, one of the parents who preferred to be anonymous said that her child had lost valuable items worth hundreds of shillings from her rental house after unknown individuals broke into her home and stole them while she had gone home for the December holiday.

“My child is now stranded at home and we do not know when she will start the new semester because of the theft,” she said.

According to the parent, the thieves took a gas cooker, her daughter’s academic certificates, and other valuable household items worth Kshs 150,000.

She called on people with information that could assist recover the lost items to notify the police.

The incident occurred after Nyamage area Chief held a public meeting with locals near the institution to sensitize residents on the need to have a peaceful coexistence with the students attending Kisii University.

On his part, Kisii University Vice Chancellor John Akama assured the institution’s students of their safety in the campus but reminded them that it is difficult to guard all hostels that are outside the campus.

“Although we value all of our students, it is not possible to offer security to all of them because they operate from different places outside the university. We appeal to our students to take personal security and responsibility as the university ensures to better their welfare,” said Akama.

The VC called on students to rent houses that are in safe areas to ensure they live peacefully while they study at the institution.
