Parents will need to pay more school fees if the Ministry of Education’s proposed reforms go on as expected.
The outgoing Cabinet Secretary for Education advocated for the transition of Grade 6 learners from their public schools to private schools for the Junior Secondary School (JSS) level.
According to CS Magoha, this was due to most private schools had cooperated with the Ministry of Education’s regulations on the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Magoha also revealed that the government’s move of proposing to go with private schools was a way of encouraging them to increase inclusiveness throughout the transition time of the competency-based curriculum.
Besides having many classrooms, private schools have fully equipped laboratories that will be used for learning.
Magoha also revealed that he had pushed primary schools to upgrade to junior high schools especially those in metropolitan areas.
The CS also warned that the double intake transition was one of a kind and may not happen for quite some time.
“Private schools would only come to the portal when they have conformed, since they are businesses, you cannot force them,” he said.
On the 15th of August, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) opened their portal for Grade 6 students to select junior secondary schools that they like.
The impending forms that could be enacted by the Ministry of Education have left parents in a state of confusion while other parents want to be included on the education task committee.
Other additional parties also want to be a part of the CBC issue resolution process and propose plausible options.
