Huawei Kenya finished a week-long online training on 5G for over 240 university students from around the country as part of advanced efforts to prepare the country to take advantage of this new futuristic technology.
A long list of countries and economic blocks around the world have already adopted 5G strategies and plans that have identified the central role 5G will play in their economies in both creating jobs and creating economic output.
5G has the ability to provide high-speed connectivity for schools, businesses, homes, and hospitals. It enables step-changes in industrial productivity in sectors such as manufacturing and transport, creates opportunities for entirely new business models and services in industries such as tourism, broadcasting, entertainment, and gaming, and it does all this while emitting lower carbon per MB of data.
This year, 5G rolled out in over 80 networks globally. This was with the intention of reaching 70 million subscribers twice what 4G achieved. 5G handles many more connections at much faster speeds with the added advantage of better security.
For most new technologies, there is a lot of anticipation about its capabilities and how it can help with Kenya’s economic and social development once it gets rolled out here.
Being a leader in 5G, Huawei identified a need to create a course to equip students in Kenya with the tools to decipher and navigate this technology. The students went through a 2-hour interactive course, 90-minute lectures, and 30 minutes of Questions and Answers each day with a different group.
The course has enhanced the students’ understanding of the 5G technology, from the perspective of technology, regulation, standards, policy, economy, society, and environment.
The course was trained by Huawei global specialist Ding Yajie who provided answers to many of the student’s questions as well as ask them questions to test their understanding at the end of each session. Topics that Mr. Ding covered involved 5G architecture, varied deployment scenarios, application uses, and challenges.
“The Huawei 5G Training presented by Ding Yajie in an enthusiastic manner. The course helped to supplement what I already know about networking and wireless technology.
The courses are done in two parts namely 5G Technology and Trends; and 5G Use Cases and Business Models.
“Training the group of University students from Kenya this week was a great experience, they were thoroughly engaged and eager to learn more about the 5G technology,” said Ding Yaji, the trainer.
One of the students Sylvia Jebet Kipkemoi, who joined the specialist training, said, “Well-explained diagrams and videos made the session was very effective. Illustrations that covered the comparison of 5G with LTE (4G) and 3G revealed how the 5G platform is simply more superior and stronger. Now that I know about 5G, I can’t wait to experience it.”
Online learning and training, conducted by Huawei, is still ongoing.
Recently, Huawei conducted an online job fair for students to apply for internships and permanent jobs with the firm. The Chief Guest at the Job fair was Principal Secretary Jerome Ochieng, who thanked Huawei for enabling growth in the sector and in creating jobs.
“I thank our partners in the private sector, including Huawei, who have supported this and other programs such as Seeds of the Future and the Ajira Digital Program which has trained over 100,000 youths,” said the PS.
