Here Are the Reasons Why the Government Wants To Make PE Compulsory in Schools

All institutions of basic education are going to be required to have sports clubs and committees that will be tasked with managing the teaching of physical education.

This is in line with a new government policy that is intended to make games a crucial part of the curriculum.

Schools will have teachers who are trained and regularly retrained to help in teaching Physical Education (PE). This is according to the new guidelines of the Ministry of Education.

At the moment Physical Education is taught in schools but teachers and students alike do not take it seriously as it is not examined and is not a compulsory subject. However, that is now set to change with the new guidelines in place.

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha is seeking to make PE s compulsory subject in schools and taught just like other regular subjects.

The Ministry’s document puts emphasis on Physical Education as it will align schools with the requirements of the new Competency-Based Curriculum which has cited sports as an area of learning and a career pathway.

Besides, Physical Education alongside sports will prepare learners for “a lifelong active lifestyle.”
