The Government has warned private schools against flouting the directives issued regarding holiday tuition.
The government has called on owners of private schools not to force learners to attend classes during the 10-day holiday after the close of the first term.
The Ministry of Education received information about some private schools that are offering holiday tuition. This information was divulged by the Principal Secretary to the State Department of Early Learning and Basic Education Dr Julius Jwan.
“We have received information from Mombasa and some areas where some private schools have put children in the institutions in the name of tuition.
“Let them have a break. We know our schedule is very tight and we had a case in Mombasa where our senior ministry official found learners in class. Schools are closed,” said Dr Julius Jwan.
The PS urged school owners to adhere to guidelines provided by the Ministry of Education.
“You cannot put children in school at this time and they only have 10 days to rest before reopening. Even if you need money, give parents time to prepare children,” said PS Julius Jwan.
On her part, Roselyne Litaba, the Sub-County Director of Education implored parents to allow their children to relax and engage in recreational activities for the remaining few days with a few hours of study.
“We call on parents to pay for tuition for their children at this moment of the holidays but they should be allowed to have a rest,” said Litaba adding that young people are getting mental illness due to stress and pressure of the congested academic calendar,
Litaba urged candidates to focus on a revision due to the fixed timelines caused by the prolonged closure of schools.
The crash timelines came about as a result of the prolonged closure of schools in March to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.
