The Teachers Service Commission has ‘favoured’ teachers with the English/Literature combination in this month’s recruitment exercise.
In the advertised vacancies, teachers with the combination were allocated a total of 884 slots. This represents a significant gap when compared to the other combinations.
English/Literature teachers were allocated 253 slots in replacement slots and a further 631 slots in new recruitment totalling 884 slots.
Maths/Physics combination got 112 slots and a further 419 in recruitment representing a total of 531 slots.
The huge allocation of English/Literature teachers means that there is a big shortage of teachers of the combination in secondary schools. TSC allocates vacancies according to the needs and shortage of teachers in schools.
The recruitment exercise seeks to hire a total of 14,460 teachers. This is the highest number of advertised slots advertised in recent years. These teachers will go a long way in addressing the acute shortage of teachers in public primary and secondary schools.
TSC advertised the availability of 5,000 teaching vacancies that are to support the government’s 100 per cent transition of learners from primary to secondary schools.
The move is intended to address the ever-increasing teacher shortage in public schools across the country.
