Cabinet Secretary for Education Prof George Magoha has issued an ultimatum to contractors working on the second phase of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) classrooms giving them two weeks to finish the projects and hand them over.
Prof Magoha said that since the project began two weeks ago, around 500 out of the 3,500 classrooms have already been completed.
According to him, this is behind the schedule and he asked the contractors to make haste and complete the classrooms before the national examinations scheduled on the 9th of August.
“I want to urge the contractors who are a bit slow that our end game should be around the end of this month. Let us try and complete the remaining 3,000 classrooms by the end of this month so that we go into the elections we have reached the target.
“We want to go to elections when we are a bit relaxed but if you will not have completed, then it means we shall continue working into the next government to ensure that the work is done and this will be unfair to us,” said CS Magoha.
The CS revealed that his ministry will push the contractors to deliver the classrooms on time to ensure that the CBC is not derailed.
In the first phase, 6,500 classrooms were constructed countrywide with private schools expected to construct around 4,000 classrooms. This means that the total number of classrooms will reach 14,000.
While Commissioning two classrooms meant for the CBC at Otieno Oyoo Secondary School located in Kisumu, CS Magoha revealed that the government was on the right path to implementing the CBC.
Magoha also attended a scouts camp for the Nyanza region which was held at the school where he implored the Scouts movement to be expanded to combat the rising cases of indiscipline in schools.
According to Magoha, the Scouts Movement has been instilling high levels of discipline in learners over many years and transforms the learners into responsible citizens.
“Discipline is what is lacking in our schools. We must therefore expand the scouting movement in our schools and include it in co-curricular activities to ensure that our children are disciplined,” said CS Magoha.
