Cooperative University Students Protest the Murder of their Colleague

Students of the Cooperative University of Kenya have held protests in Gataka town over the brutal murder of their colleagues.

Vincent Omwamba, the 22-year-old was attacked by unknown people on Wednesday night on his way to where he stayed in the Riverside area.

The deceased, commonly known as Mwamba by his colleagues was stabbed and he succumbed to his injuries.

The students blocked Gataka Road for most of Thursday morning. However, the police managed to abate the tense situation and managed to arrest their protestor’s leaders who were later released.

Kajiado North Sub-County Police Commander Joakin Mecha said that the student has been stabbed and his phone stolen.

At the moment detectives are probing the incident and shall arrest the criminals who committed the heinous act.

One of the protesting students who were arrested and released revealed that incidents of insecurity in the areas have risen and asked for the police to increase their patrols.

“If the police are not going to do anything, we shall talk to comrades and they will take charge of security in this area. We want justice for our comrade,” said the student.

The students revealed that those who had breached peace in the area had been arrested and later released back to the community.

One of the students going by the name ‘Sunshine’ revealed that she had left her rental house near the murder scene following several cases of lawlessness.

“I was told to move out to another place. The deceased remained on the plot,” she said revealing that another student had been murdered earlier this month.

Empakasi location Assistant Chief Peter Kamau said that attempts have been made to do away with illicit brews in the town only to see wines and spirits business growing in the area.

He revealed that the Kajiado County licensing board should limit the number of licenses issued for liquor in the town because most residents are students. He also implored landlords to set up lights on their roads.

Gataka town is one of the towns that are quickly developing in Kajiado County with most businesses being moved from the congested Ongata Rongai to the town.
