Chavakali Boys High School learners and parents have been made aware of the amount to pay for damages.
Every student has been informed that they will have to pay Sh. 4,050 for the damages following a fire in the school that happened on the 8th of November 2021.
According to the principal of the school, the amount was reached after officials from Public Works conducted an assessment of the damages that the fire caused to be at a total cost of Sh. 8.7 million.
The principal revealed to the media that the Sh. 8.7 million has been spread to each learner meaning every learner will be paying a sum of Sh. 4,050.
“This amount per learner must be paid by each student on the reporting day as well as clearing with all outstanding fees arrears. Paying in cash is not accepted except only bank cheques and bank slips,” said the Principal Mr Warutere yesterday.
The school’s administration has devised a plan to repair the institution with Sh. 3.1 million being allocated to repairing the dormitory and another Sh. 3.1 being allocated for the repair of broken windows and doors. Plumbing will cost a figure of Sh. 338,600 with missing kitchenware going for Sh. 498,200. Another 342,000 will be used in repairing electric parts that were damaged and their related gadgets.
Sh. 50,400 will be used in replacing items stolen from the school canteen, Sh. 273,000 for items stolen from the staff room and Sh. 80,200 for repairing school vehicles that were damaged during the students’ unrest.
36 double-decker beds will be purchased at a total cost of Sh. 540,000 with affected students compensated with items worth Sh. 439,200.
The school has been scheduled to reopen on the 23rd of November when all schools across the country will also be reporting following the mid-term break which is set to start on Friday the 19th of November 2021.
Elsewhere in Kakamega High School parents have been told to part with Sh. 9823 per learner to pay for damages caused during the school fire.
According to a financial assessment done by the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development and Public Works on the damages caused, parents, will have to pay a total of Sh. 21.6 million to cover for damage compensation.
This will include Sh. 695,420 for CCTV repairs and 280 double-decker beds that will cost a whooping Sh. 4.1 Million.
560 students who lost their property in the fire will be compensated by property that will be roughly Sh. 4.5 Million.
