CBC Classes Ready with Classes 7 and 8 rooms to be used for Junior Secondary School

The Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) is set to make the first step into junior secondary school next year as CBC classes are now ready in most schools.

Besides the classes, the current classes 7 and 8 will host junior secondary school classes in primary schools as the 8-4-4 system is phased out.

2023 will be the year that the CBC makes its debut in junior secondary school level and shall comprise of Grades 7, 8 and 9.

The CBC’s pioneers learners in the 2-6-3-3-3 system will move from primary school to junior secondary level once they complete their Grade 6 national examinations.

According to Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Jwan, the junior secondary school will be hosted in both secondary and primary schools with the vacated two classes set to be utilized for the same.

“The classrooms used by classes 7 and 8 pupils will stay vacant because of the inception of the CBC. However, the classes will not be wasted because these are public resources. They will be used by learners of junior secondary schools,” said Dr Julius Jwan.

It is still not clear whether headteachers of primary schools will be charged with being in charge of junior secondary school due to the classrooms vacated being used to host junior secondary schools.

This week, Cabinet Secretary for Education Prof George Magoha appreciated the government’s efforts in hastening the construction of the now complete classrooms which are around 700 in total that will boost the CBC.

CS Magoha was at St. Luke’s Mukunike High School located in Kangundo, Machakos County where he revealed that more than 10% of the classrooms are now complete.

Area MP Fabian Kyule who was among the CS’s entourage also chipped with applauding the government’s efforts.

Magoha then warned against drawing the CBC into politics saying that the CBC is learner-based and is the best system for the Kenyan education system.
