Police have arrested several Maranda high school students hours before the school administration suspended ten of them for allegedly setting the school dormitory on fire on the night of Friday the 13th March 2020.
The students were apprehended and taken to Bondo Police Station after they were suspected to have spearheaded the attempts to set the Gor Mahia dormitory ablaze.
Among the ten suspended, is a form four student and nine form threes.
Students taken to Bondo Police Station for Questioning
According to Mr. Elisha Omalla, the Bondo Sub-county director of Education, the students were taken to Bondo Police Station for questioning about their involvement on the fire incident.
The fire started from one of the dormitory cubicles before it was contained from damaging more properties.
No injuries were reported as a result of the fire. However, a few students lost their personal belongings.
Sources on the ground claim that the fire was put-off by the help of students and the subordinate staff.
Allegations of Poor Working Relations
There are allegations of bad working relations between the current school Principal Mr. Edwin Namachanja and some teachers and students.
No official communication has been given out by the school concerning the fire incident, arrests, and student suspensions.
Bondo Police Commander Antony Wafula reported that the suspected students recorded statements in the station.
Mr. Wafula added that investigations are still ongoing and that the students who will be found culpable will be arraigned in court.
Upon suspension from the school, the Maranda high school board directed the parents of the ten students to pick their children from the Bondo Police Station.
