All ECDE Centres in Nyeri County to Get Free Milk
Nyeri County is set to introduce a free milk program in all public early childhood development and education centers in a bid to boost the health of young learners.
This was after the county assembly overwhelmingly passed a motion on the scheme on Tuesday.
The House urged the Education Department to give priority to the program in its 2021/22 budget.
Around 21,230 ECDE pupils shall benefit from the scheme.
Gikondi MCA Mary Wamuyu who was the mover of the motion said on Wednesday that the program shall provide nutritional requirements to improve the health of the children while at the same time increasing enrolment, attendance, and concentration of learners.
Wamuyu stated that many children suffer from malnutrition and this leads to stunted growth.
She cited the statistics that the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics released in 2015 shows that out of a population of seven million under-fives, 1.82 million were suffering from malnutrition.
“Many of these children come from poor families and go to school on empty stomachs. If they are given milk, they will concentrate on learning,” she argued.
